Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Weslaco public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Westgate Drive signal synchronization
Six traffic signals along Westgate Drive from the Expressway to Old 83 will be modernized and synchronized using $609,335 in federal safety funds — aimed at cutting the long backups drivers face at peak hours. The city is on the hook for any overruns.
Citywide Pavement Condition Assessment
Seven street segments across town will be repaved, including 8th, 10th, Esplanada, Palmas and Pino Streets, with the 10th Street segment extended to cover Bridge to Utah. Residents on those streets should see smoother roads soon.
Sugarcane Drive road closure hurting small business
A coffee shop owner told the Commission her sales dropped ~80% after both access roads closed with little notice. The mayor directed staff and the EDC to meet with her and look at help.
Interstate 2 frontage road flooding between Texas Boulevard and Westgate
Only about three ditches connect to I-2 across the whole corridor, so neighborhood water bottlenecks at the frontage roads — stranding drivers and threatening hospital access during storms. TxDOT and the city plan to explore detention ponds and new drainage connections.
Traffic Safety on 10th and 11th Streets (Jolene Subdivision)
Forty-five residents are asking, for the third time, for speed bumps, completed sidewalks, and warning lights on 10th and 11th Streets, where about 950 vehicles a day speed past — including Weslaco East students. A 2023 speed study was done but the data was never provided, and nearby Garden Terrace got speed bumps and a 20-mph limit.
Westgate & 18th intersection study
The congested Westgate/18th intersection will get a $54,900 traffic study to determine whether a signal or other improvements are warranted — a step toward making the project grant-ready.
Mid-Valley Airport drainage project
An interlocal with the county drainage district gets surveying, environmental and drainage design done in-house at lower cost, clearing the way for the runway extension funded by an $8 million legislative appropriation.
Pike Road reconstruction
Pike Road — a key industrial corridor — gets a full rebuild design, not just a repave, fixing misaligned storm inlets and drainage problems along the way. Funded by 2025 bonds.
Pike & VoTech roundabout and traffic congestion
The city is asking the feds for $5.4 million — with zero local match — to build the Vo-Tech & Pike roundabout. The price nearly doubled from earlier estimates because of underground utilities and a switch to concrete.
6th Street and Airport Drive traffic congestion
Everyone hates this intersection. A $15,114 change order moves signal upgrades there, with AI-based signal timing, and staff is meeting with TxDOT to sync the lights with the highway signals.
