Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Weslaco public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Unified Development Ordinance adoption
The city is consolidating 12+ ordinances into one modern development code with new housing types (patio homes, narrow lots), 2024 building codes, dark-sky lighting rules, and stronger drainage standards. Impact fees will make new development pay its share of water and sewer infrastructure, with adoption targeted for October 20.
Multifamily development moratorium extension
Weslaco is extending its pause on new duplex, fourplex and apartment applications for 120 more days while the city finishes its new development code and catches up on water, sewer and drainage infrastructure. Staff expects this to be the last extension, with the UDO ready before it expires.
