Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Weslaco public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Building and fire code updates
The city would adopt the 2024 editions of the international building, plumbing, mechanical and related codes, plus the 2024 fire codes, effective January 1, 2027.
Sanitation staffing and service delays
Trash trucks are still hitting neighborhoods at 7:30 a.m. after 5 a.m. starts, driven by driver vacancies — mostly from pay competition with nearby cities. Staff is cross-training and shifting to four 10-hour days to cut overtime.
Regional animal sheltering costs and rates
New agreements with Alamo, Edcouch, Pharr, Progreso, San Juan, and Willacy County for animal sheltering were presented but held for later action.
Vape shop regulation
A new ordinance targets what vape shops can sell — banning synthetic drugs and illegal THC — and requires new shops to get a special use permit. Eleven existing shops are grandfathered unless they sell or change ownership.
Outdoor emergency siren system
The city is buying a $133,832.78 siren system that automatically sounds on National Weather Service flood and tornado warnings — reaching people without cell phones or internet. The mayor wants a daily noon test tone like Weslaco's old sirens; it could be live by February 1.
